Among the 6 tutors profiled, credentials cluster around Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction and the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE), both of which draw on phonics-first, systematic approaches to reading instruction. My Journey
How did I begin?
The same way many people like me do—with love and concern for family.
My daughter struggled to learn how to read and spell, even though it came easily to everyone else in our family. She knew her letter sounds, and I taught her phonics, but I didn’t know what else to do beyond having her read to me and hoping it would eventually click.
When my children started school, I volunteered hundreds of hours in their elementary classrooms, helping struggling students with reading and writing. I was able to help many children improve—but not my own daughter. Despite my efforts, her progress was painfully slow.
Her second-grade teacher suggested vision therapy. We were told it would fix her reading issues. Afterward, I hired an Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutor and fully expected she would catch up by the end of third grade. She didn’t. By the middle of fourth grade, it was clear that nothing had changed.
Looking back, I’m surprised that dyslexia was never suggested—not by her teachers, not by her tutor, and not by me. I mistakenly believed dyslexia was a vision problem, and since her vision had been “fixed,” I ruled it out entirely.
Eventually, I made the decision to homeschool her. We found a few things that helped, but the underlying problem remained.
Then one day, my 15-year-old daughter texted me:
“Mom, do you think I could have dyslexia?”
I didn’t have an answer.
After many hours of research, I came to a life-changing realization: she is dyslexic—and it runs in my family. My father and my late brother both struggled with it as well. For the first time, I understood the “why” behind their struggles.
And with a cause comes hope—because there can also be a solution.
At the same time, I began working with both my daughter and my father.
We started with Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy. While valuable, I quickly saw that the heavy rules and exceptions created an overwhelming cognitive load—especially for my father.
